Was that a good thing or was it intimidating?A: To just to have Chevy and Beverly in the movie, and even have them on set, was the ultimate affirmation for us. They showed up with great positive collaborative energy, and it meant a lot to all of us. It was surreal to stand there while we were shooting and just kind of look Clark Griswold in the eye and have these special moments.Q: There are some definite but subtle connections between Chevy锟絪 character and yours.A: I talked with the filmmakers a lot about how Rusty might be similar to Clark but is also his own man and his own character. I think Rusty has a little bit more vulnerability than Clark. That锟絪 also a reflection of where we are in comedy. What锟絪 expected of a movie in 2015 is to tell more of an arc. The original film has very little arc. There锟絪 very little narrative or character development. And the characters have virtually no consequences for their actions throughout the whole movie, which is part of the delight of that movie, but I think that锟絪 a hard sell in 2015. So some of what Rusty is endowed with in this iteration reflects a slightly more nuanced narrative. But the guys wrote it with me in mind, and thought of what I could bring to it, and I锟絤 a very different energy than Chevy Chase. You seem to be singing in every movie these days. Is that in your contract?A: Let锟絪 call a spade a spade here: I sing too much in front of the camera. But I think singing, especially when it锟絪 inappropriate to sing, is one of the funniest things there is. And in this particular case, it fits. It锟絪 a metaphor for how connected the family is. So when Rusty is stridently singing out on his own, he锟絪 isolated. But when the family joins him, it锟絪 a really nice expression of family bonding.Q: Was the road trip in this movie reminiscent of any road trips you took with your family in real life?A: Making this film was personal to me for many reasons. I锟絤 the youngest of three kids, and our family took lots of road trips when we were growing up in Atlanta. It was a four- or five-hour drive to the beach, which we did all the time. And back then, air conditioning in cars wasn锟絫 so good, so everyone got overheated and angry, and we just hated each other by the time we got there.
